Dear Portola Families,
Portola Elementary School prides itself for its diverse student and family population. From February 1 to March 1 is Black History Month. Black History Month provides a time for all educators and students to remember together the struggles of African Americans to obtain the basic civil rights afforded to other citizens of the United States, the challenges African Americans had faced together and the contributions of African Americans to our country. Ventura Unified School District created a website specific for families to use so that they can honor the achievements and recognize the struggles of the African American community. Please click here for the Ventura Unified School District’s page on Black History Month.
Below are some more important topics and dates. Please remember we have no school on Monday for observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. School will be closed on February 20 for Presidents Day.
Academic Testing
Every trimester, teachers test students in math and language arts to measure their progress. Starting March all students be taking tests on their chromebooks or computer lab to prepare them for state testing in May.
Attendance and Class Start Time
Thank you so much for dropping your child off to school on time. This is a kind and friendly reminder that instruction begins at 8AM. That means your child needs to be inside the classroom at 8AM. Students will have an extra recess February 27 if they have no tardies for the month of February.
Lunch Time Activity Volunteers
Portola Elementary School would love to offer lunch time activities for our fourth and fifth grade students during their lunch time from 12:05-1:05 from March 1 to March 31. We can use volunteers to referee soccer games, organize a chess tournament, and play music. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering by signing up in this ParentSquare.
Coffee Chat - February 16 8AM
At our Coffee Chat we will have a brief presentation from our school district's behavior specialist on how to support your child's emotional regulation. Please reach out to the school if you have any questions about this upcoming workshop!
